C.1890. An oversized sterling silver locket from the late Victorian Aesthetic movement. The front shows a stork raising its wings and catching a fish in its beak. With the discovery of Orientalism and Japanese art, the Victorian Aesthetic movement in jewelry opened the way to stylizations of the natural world: Japanese garden scenes, flowers, birds, plants, bamboos, reeds, etc. Japanese style motifs, including Oriental fans and geometric shapes, became extremely popular with the English Victorians, after trade relations were first established with Japan in 1853. 

The locket opens and shuts properly, displaying two photo compartments inside. One side of the glass has a crack line, but it is secure. The locket has minimal surface wear on the front. The back shows normal wear and surface scratches near the bottom center.
